How far would the US government go to win the War on Terror? Men Who Stare at Goats may give you somewhat of an idea. Be forewarned, though - although this is a true story about the US military, it is not Black Hawk Down. You may be offended that this type of movie is billed as a comedy. In the end, though, you're likely to be offended by the real people and events depicted and the true expense of absurdity.
Based on British journalist Jon Ronson's non-fiction book by the same name, Ewan McGregor stars as a reporter who meets a questionable US covert operational, played by George Clooney. The keyword is "questionable". Yes, he's American, but everything else? Well, that's the questionable part. Watch Men Who Stare at Goats online and you'll get the idea.
Clooney's character intrigues McGregor, and why wouldn't he? Psychic weapons? Jedi warriors? Walking through walls? It's clearly time for a road trip, and that's just what they do. But this is no vacation. They have a purpose. They're in search of the missing program leader, played by Jeff Bridges, who has gone missing.
As if McGregor, Clooney and Bridges weren't enough for one film, Kevin Spacey also stars as a past psychic acquaintance, also part of the rogue military program. The rest of the film makes for some funny scenes and overall should prove an enjoyable time at the movies. McGregor holds his own beautifully with what are easily three of the biggest box office stars in the past 10 years. The roles of both Clooney and Bridges are pleasingly reminiscent of their respective Coen brothers' characters, and Spacey is in usual top form.
What is important to know before you see it and remember throughout is that this is not just another tale for the books. What makes this one stand out is that the story is fact. Some names and certain other things have been changed, surely in the interest of legal harmony. But aside from those small modifications, the story is about real people and real events. Thankfully, it is funny, because the real message of the story, the absurdities that can and do result when fear partners with ignorance, won't start to sink in until later. Only this time, you can't console yourself by saying, "It's only a movie." Watch Men Who Stare at Goats online for now and laugh while you still can.
